Warrior armour and yielding velvets at LG Fashion Week

March 31st, 2010

Evan Biddell has decided it’s time we conquer our fears, but first we need armour. Biddell took the defensive shells of prehistoric animals as inspiration for the collection, which he calls Prehistory.

Stiff panels of fabric protruded from the backs of numerous of Biddell’s dresses, while others drooped outwards off the shoulders, creating big exoskeleton-like silhouettes Biddell says were build to emulate equipment worn in battle.

He hopes the clothes create women feel fearless, like warriors. I’m sick of being frightened of everything.

With shapes like this, when you have impressive that is giving you a hunchback or sticking your thighs out, you can’t be afraid of anything, you have to just work it. If you’re letting the clothes eat you energetic, it’s not going to work.

Madonna teams with daughter Lola on fashion row

March 30th, 2010

NEW YORK — When Madonna required inspiration for her latest fashion collection, she didn’t have to look far. The pop icon teamed up with her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes to create Material Girl, an affordable juniors’ clothing line that debut on Macy’s this fall.

This is not Madonna’s first raid into designing. In 2007, she teamed up with H&M to create a restricted edition collection, M by Madonna. This time roughly, her venture into fashion will be long-lasting: She has commenced a new company called MG ICON which, in addition to producing the juniors’ line, will also put out other collections with eyewear.

The Material Girl collection comprises jeans, shoes, fingerless gloves, necklaces and other accessories. Many of the pieces are stimulated by Madonna and her daughter’s dance roots.

Madonna just spoke about Material Girl, her relationship with Lourdes (nicknamed Lola) and her fashion risks and regrets.

Lola spent mainly of her childhood growing up in England. According to her, she thinks people have more style in London, particularly the boys. French boys in particular have very good style, according to Lola. I imagine she has been very influenced by European fashion. She is very influenced by the music she listens to, dissimilar bands she is in to and she has favorite models. She takes all types of dance classes. She is enthused by different items people wear as dancers whether it is a hip- hop class or a jazz class or ballet class. My Christian Dior shoes will go missing and then a few fabulous bags I won’t be able to find or my skinny jeans, the only pair that fit me are gone.

I see her more as an innovative person, as an artist and less as my daughter as we are working, and then every once and a while I memorized she is my daughter, said Madonna.

India Fashion Week Wills Lifestyle kick off in New Delhi

March 26th, 2010

After a trivial hiccup over the lack of a fire safety permit, the 15th edition of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW) Autumn-Winter 2010 got off to a flying start in New Delhi, showcasing the newest collections of India’s top fashion designers.

Kotwara, the collection named after one of Asia’s oldest Islamic dynasties, offered by Meera and Muzaffar Ali, saw models take to the catwalk in bright, playful colours and geometric prints.

Using fabrics ranging from silk, chiffon and even feathers, Meera Ali said they were appearing to challenge the notion of luxury in the world of high fashion.

The collection’s name is Greenhouse and portrays the times of today. A greenhouse is an artificial space wherever living things are grown. So the collection is a philosophy based on shapes and what is measured luxurious, said Meera Ali.

Fur is a luxury according to some but there is no fur in our collection and we are annoying to show other materials that can be seen as luxurious, she added.

Fashion Designer Tarun Tahiliani steered away from his usual jewel tones and tested with shades of navy, gray and cream.

Fashion was galloping and racing and everyone was doing everything and it was much westernized. I intentionally took it back to a much more modern Indian way, he added.

The WLIFW-AW 2010, hosted by the Fashion Design Council of India, will observer the participation of 130 designers and 75 of them will also be presenting shows.
