Alexander McQueen drops out to inventor of folding plug in design awards

March 16th, 2010

An innovative folding electric plug now beat a final collection by late fashion guru Alexander McQueen to land a top design award.

McQueen, who committed suicide last month, had his most recent spring/summer catwalk range placed on the shortlist for the title of Brit Insurance Design of the Year just days after his death.

It drops out to London student Min-Kyu Choi’s reinterpretation of the plug, which folds flat for storage.

His design beat more than 90 international nominees who were selected in seven categories.

The winners of the categories went promoted to the final judging stage and Choi was presented with his title by judging panel chairman Antony Gormley at a gala dinner held at the Design Museum in London tonight.

Mr Gormley said: Thought-through, responsive and modest, the folding plug shows how intelligent, elegant and inventive design can make a variation to everyone’s life.

The winning design was stimulated by having to carry around a hefty plug to power the world’s thinnest laptop, a MacBook Air.

Mr Choi drew admire when he showcased the plug at the Royal College of Art’s graduate show in 2009.

Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum, said: It’s great to see such a practical but elegant expression of what design can do to make everyday life so much better. Min-Kyu Choi is a designer just setting out on his career and he obviously has a great future ahead of him.

Selected designs are on show at the Design Museum until October 31.

Madonna’s latest clothing collection confirmed

March 16th, 2010

Whether or not Madonna is set to commence a new designer clothing collection is something that we here at Secret Sales have been speculating about for weeks.

The fashionista has fronted drives by both Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton, as well as collaborating with high street chain H&M back in 2007 to create a bespoke clothing collection, so I think it’s fair to say she’s not without fashion experience.

But this time, Madonna’s venture into the designer clothing world will not be unaccompanied – she will be helped by her stylish 13-year-old daughter Lourdes to create a collection of children’s clothes for American department store Macy’s.

Lourdes seems to have developed into a style icon in the making in what seems like a split second so we bet she will be giving her mum more than just a helping hand.

The first collaboration among the duo and US-based Iconix Brand Group will be released in August and is set to include a collection of back-to-school shoes, clothing, handbags and jewellery.

I’m pretty sure anything designed by somebody as racy as Madonna would have been banned instantly from my school!

Madonna is a fashion icon who can convey a new dimension to our junior’s customer.

The star’s collection for H&M established a fairly lukewarm welcoming from fashion followers – despite Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney’s collaborations with the high street chain selling out in mere minutes, just 50 people queued outside the Oxford Street flagship store on the day Madonna’s collection launched.
