Picking up the threads on the catwalk

WITH snow on the mountains and a chill in the boardroom, David Jones set its gaze firmly on a warmer place yesterday, unveiling one of its most excellent summer collections in years.

More than 180 garments from 25 Australian designers hit the runway, featuring bold-coloured summer dresses, ladylike lace frocks, contemporary prints and sexy swimwear – all harmonized with sky-high heels.

For the finale, 38 models dressed in every shade of nude, blush and peach formed a pretty fashion moment that also ticked off the biggest summer color trend of the season.

Exclusive: Designer Tracy Reese discussion About Being a Michelle Obama Favorite

Michelle Obama has been speckled in an assortment of amazing fashion designer Tracy Reese dresses recently, so when I caught up with the designer at a party to celebrate the opening of Target’s first Manhattan store, I had just one question for her: What is it like to be a first lady favorite?

“It feels so good,” said Reese as she laughed and then went on to clarify how she met Obama for the first time at a fundraiser just two and a half years ago. “She gave me a large hug and she was like, ‘I love your things and I admire your work so much!'”

In nature, the designer was flattered–to say the least. “I was, shell-shocked,” she says, “because I didn’t even know that she knew who I was, and why she would?”

She intensely recalls what Obama said next: “‘I’d love to be wearing your clothes.'” To which, Reese (smartly) replied, “I would love that; it would be such an honor.”

While almost anything from the feminine chic label would seem amazing on the first lady, a lot of thought is given to what is sent to the White House for contemplation.

“I don’t think she wants to be fussing with her clothes all day,” says Reese on the topic of Obama’s sartorial necessities. “I wouldn’t want to send her anything that didn’t work for each occasion.”
